By Eliyah Lara Sports Writer 12/9/22 Cayden Martinez-Hightower: United States Marine Corps
After countless hours of conversation with a recruiter, Senior Cayden Martinez-Hightower finally decided on what he wanted to do with his life. After the third visit, that is when Martinez put the pen to the paper. Martinez has been in the Air Force Jr. Reserve Officers’ Training Corps all four years of his high school career, and he’s hoping that it can get him farther in his military career. The ROTC scholarship through the Marine Corps is given to people who have the ability to become officers in the Corps. In order to obtain this scholarship, students must do well in their physical training and get good scores on both their ACT and ASVAB. “I joined the Marines because I felt that it was the best branch of service for me,” Martinez-Hightower explains. Martinez-Hightower is scheduled to leave for basic training in San Diego, California on June 5th, 2023. From there, Martinez-Hightower will spend 13 weeks learning all the ropes of how to become a Marine. “I’m excited because it's a new experience, going from living in Scottsbluff where nothing happens to the prettiness in San Diego,” Martinez-Hightower elaborates. The Marine Corps has various jobs to choose from, depending on one’s ASVAB scores. Martinez-Hightower’s first choice is to become a musician, but if not accepted, he plans on going into infantry. Martinez is also planning on doing 20 or more years, depending on where it takes him. The highest rank Martinez is planning on getting is Sergent Major, but if he gets the ROTC scholarship, then he’ll plan on Colonel. After signing countless amounts of paperwork and taking a trip down to Denver for a bunch of testing, Martinez has sworn in. From now until June 5th, Martinez will be attending physical training with his recruiter and a bunch of other recruits on Thursday evening, and attending poolee functions one Saturday out of the month. Thank you Cayden Martinez for wanting to service your country. |
Breanna Harpold: University of Roehampton in London
When Senior Breanna Harpold opened the e-mail for one of her dream universities, she was shocked to learn she was awarded a full ride scholarship. Harpold is planning on attending the University of Roehamton in London next year; her plans are to study in Pre-Law and to get a degree in corporate law. She wants to defend companies as a lawyer but more than that, she wants to be able to make an income from them. But that’s not the only thing she's looking forward to the most. “Something I’m looking forward to when I go to college is just the experience of being in a different country and also getting the opportunity to also go sightseeing,” Harpold explains. Now although Harpold is going to be in a different county with a full ride scholarship in her hands, there are requirements she needs to follow in order to attend. Harpold has to write an essay for why she would be a good candidate for the scholarship. She also has to pay for her own VISA and get it approved. She has to maintain a GPA of 2.8. Although going to England is exciting, Harpold also has some worries. “I’m most worried about the fact that I’m not going to be in the United States anymore and it's going to be a little hard adjusting to the new environment, but I also know that whenever I’m on my breaks I can always come home,” Harpold elaborates. Harpold plans to hope over the pond and accomplish her dreams. |
