By: Abby Harveson Feature Writer 2/27/23 The future chefs of Scottsbluff High School recently traveled across the state to compete at State ProStart. During ProStart, each team races against the clock to wow the judges with their unique and creative cooking skills.
“The best thing about competing is the feedback we get back to improve what we’ve worked on for so long,” Kris Martinez, 12, says. Amazingly, all three teams this year were chosen to compete. The team names and their participants consist of: Chef Hunter and The Spice Girls (Seniors Priscilla Martinez, Hunter Howlett, Elliana Eichner, and Alyssa Mendoza), Wonky Waffles (Seniors Abigail Parker, Avery Pedito, and Jacob Chaveria), and Half and Half (Seniors Adana Barron, Kris Martinez and Aimee Sanchez). “I love cooking. It’s been a hobby of mine since I was nine, so ProStart was something I wanted to do,” Adana Barron, 12, states. Advancing by two teams to Omaha’s top three showdown, Scottsbluff dominated the competition. Team Half and Half received the award of Best Use of Dry Beans and Chef Hunter & the Spice Girls received Best of Pork. The Wonky Waffles received Best of Beef, Best Entree, and Best Menu. All three teams, winning 1st, and 3rd, swept the board in management. Chef Hunter & the Spice Girls qualified for nations in Washington DC. |
“It’s crazy; we’ve never taken three teams to state before and we swept when we were there!” Alyssa Mendoza, 12, exclaimed.
In the evening, the group pulled up to the school with arms full of trophies. ProStart proves to be an extremely beneficial activity for students to learn proper and necessary cooking skills, while also having fun at the same time. The quick, but memorable trip will never be forgotten by any of the students participating, along with their incredible teacher, Hannah Liptac. “I am speechless. What a trip! I am blessed by some truly incredible kids,” Liptac, exclaims. |
