By Norah Flemming Indepth Writer 12/9/22 “ONWARD YOU SWINE!” echoes from the inky darkness of backstage. A spill of creatures enter into the foreground, welcoming their master. A crack of a whip, and Lady Vidma enters the stage. Princess Caroline, the victim of this archduchess of the night faces eternity in the depths of hell as the bride of Hades.
Behind the scenes, under the costume and makeup, is Senior El Sell. “Collectively I have been involved with theater for around six months. When I was little I was involved with ensembles through the Midwest, but my senior year I popped in and was like I want to do this because I got the chance to be an evil witch,” Sell explains. For Sell, the temptation of Lady Vidma was too much. After all, the evil sorceress was a role that most fought for. “My sibling had read through the play and let me know there was an evil sorceress, so I wanted to be a villain because I am evil. When I heard there was a part, I decided to try out.” Sell describes. Though the role came with a lot of anxiety for Sell, they managed to overcome it at the first practice. |
“I was so scared. I have bad anxiety and that is what kept me from joining the previous three years, but I decided screw it.” Sell comments.
After the first practice, Sell's thoughts changed. The group was welcoming to their new member, and Sell’s first and final year of high school play production was made a great one. “I loved them all. They are so wonderful, and shout out to my vitamins. Evil gang rise up!” Sell exclaims. Sell took the role of Lady Vidma and made it great. Their senior year was brought to life by the power of the archduchess of the night. |
