By Dawson Iasillo News Writer 11/24/22 America grants its people many freedoms that aren’t given in other countries. Freedom of speech, freedom of the press, and the freedom to vote are a few examples. As American citizens, it is our duty to take advantage of the opportunities granted to us. It is not fair for us to complain about the state of our nation when one does not take the time to figure out what they believe in and which leaders they want to elect.
A new Portland State University study found that fewer than 15% of eligible voters vote for local candidates such as mayors, city council members, etc. Low turn out in voting means the issues people care about will likely not be resolved. Without using our voice to elect leaders we want, our voice is drowned out, especially on local issues. A small amount of voters make local laws and elect local officials. Many people love this country and wish they could be able to vote who can’t. Plenty of criminals, underage citizens, and undocumented immigrants wish they could use their voice in this country. The people who are able to vote should use their advantage for the people who can’t! |
As high school students, we don’t have to pay taxes yet. However, all of our parents, grandparents, etc. do. Choosing to vote is choosing where tax payer’s money is spent.
Taking the time to vote is taking the time to make change for your generation and upcoming generations. Each generation has its different beliefs for obvious reasons. Times change, which means laws, bills, beliefs, and leaders have to change. Voting as soon as you are able allows this change to happen. Voting is necessary. It is important to uphold your responsibilities in this free country, ad voting is the easiest way to do that. |
