This holiday was created to celebrate the publishing of H. G. Wells' The Time Machine. Well’s book was published in 1895 however the day was not made a national holiday until 2007. While one book may seem like a useless thing to celebrate The Time Machine is responsible not only for countless sci-fi stories but also real scientists like Steven Hawking. Steven Hawkings even hosted his infamous “party for time travelers” on pretend to be a time travel day. International Talk Like a Pirate Day- September 19th By far the most infamous weird holiday due to the seeming randomness of it. Unsurprisingly, this day was created as a joke. Two friends in Oregon were playing racquetball in 1995 when they came up with the idea. They sent the idea to a comedian, Dave Berry, who is responsible for making it a thing by heavily pushing for the holiday. This day used to be pretty popular but has fallen out of popularity. It is still by far the most popular pointless holiday. |
Lame Duck Day- February 6th
Lame duck day celebrates the ratification of the 20th amendment which extended congressional terms to 13 months after election day. Well that sounds extremely boring, that means politicians who didn’t get re-elected lose almost all of their power. There are no celebrations for this day however it is marked as a national holiday and is extremely important. It helps dictate the political power and climate for the next 13 months during an election year. Source: National Day Calendar |
