Sports Feature Article:
By: Eliyah Lara Sports Writer 4/18/23 It's a bright sunny day. The birds are chirping, the smell of sunscreen wisps through the air. The girls meet their opponents on the court.
The infamous racket spin to determine who goes first, then the girls part from the middle. And… serve. Senior Jessica Davis is diving in to her final tennis season. Davis has been playing tennis since her freshman year. Throughout her high school seasons, she has made many memories with her teammates. “My favorite part of this year's season is the people, because everyone on the team is super welcoming to new players and those who have been playing together the last few years have a tight knit relationship with each other than makes all the trips fun, ”Davis says. Although she has enjoyed the experience of being on the team there were also some experiences have been challenging during the season. “I think most of us would say that Kearney is our hardest opponent because they’re a very steady team, and most of them have been playing since they were little,” Davis explains. Even though Davis has tough opponents, she never gives up throughout a game. However, she does have her favorites when it comes to playing singles or doubles. |
“I definitely like singles better than doubles. I’ve never been a strong doubles player and when I finally got into singles, I liked it a lot more. There are longer rallies, and it’s more fun to me because the ball has more pace,” Davis elaborates.
After her high school season is over, Davis is planning to attend the University of Nebraska in Lincoln and if she gets an offer for their tennis team she will gladly take it. Davis couldn’t get where she is today without her biggest supporter. “My biggest motivation has been my dad because he’s always pushed me to do better and set me up for new opportunities,” Davis explains. Whenever Davis steps on the court, the world outside of tennis doesn’t matter to her; what matters to her is doing her best and gaining another win. Her next goal for her senior year is to go to state and possibly bring home a state title. |
