Opinion Article:
By Eliyah Lara Sports Writer 11/24/22 It is that time of the year again when everyone is focused on one thing: the election. But does your vote matter? Usually no.
The midterm election this year's election is based on like minimum wage, the new members of the school board, local elections, and initiatives. People often question whether they should vote. When it comes to this election, the votes matter but when it comes to voting for a president, your vote doesn’t matter. The presidential election winner is based on electoral votes rather than the voice of the public. Most of the things on the ballots have been being voted on for many years they haven’t changed a single bit. For example, the increase in the minimum wage. Now, although many teens will love the fact that the minimum wage is going “up” they may not realize this increase means a lot of things are going to be more expensive. |
Similarly, legalizing marijuana is always on the ballot. Although it's for health reasons, we already know it's not going to change. What is the point of voting on it?
There is no point in voicing one's opinion when one knows for a fact it isn’t going to impact change. If we want the right to voice our opinions and impact our local community and country, then everyone's opinions must be heard, not just the electoral college's and politicians. If voting is for “everyone”, then everyone who lives in the U.S. should be able to vote. |
