By: Norah Fleming Indepth Writer 2/27/23 The smell of love, the sound of smooching, and that chalky taste of heart shaped candy, and of course the unending feeling of loneliness. While some think Valentine’s day is nothing more than a celebration of either your inevitable break-up, sweetened by the taste of cheap candy, or your yearly tradition of sitting at home while all your friends who are in a relationship enjoy their night out; it really is one of the best holidays out there
Valentine’s as a high schooler may be boring, and don’t get me wrong it is sometimes, but in elementary I popped off when it came to creating boxes for that yearly Valentine’s party. Valentines were no different; I acquired only the best Hershey’s chocolate for my snot-nosed classmates, and the cards were of the finest quality. Though all the luster wore off the second I hit middle school, the halls of BMS shattered my Valentine giving soul as the new rush of hormones gave way to relationships. No longer was Valentine’s a day to give cards to my favorite friends. Instead it turned to rosy red carnations, which gave insight to your deepest love. Now Valentine’s Day is probably one of my favorite holidays. Not for the lovey dovey part, though. Instead I adore Valentine’s for the excuse to get people stuff. Tell me, which holiday has the cutest stuffed animals? Christmas? No. Halloween? Maybe. But Valentine’s Day has by far the most adorable stuffed animals. Covered in hearts, rosy reds and pale pinks. Absolutely gorgeous. And have you heard of break-up bears? Who could even be mad if they got broken up with by a cute teddy bear with a broken heart? Not to mention the candy, I might diss them, but really I go FERAL for those heart shaped bricks of sugar. There is also chocolate, for chocolate lovers Valentine’s Day is the holy grail. |
While stuffed animals and candy are great, let's talk about the atmosphere. Love, with how lovey dovey everything is it is hard not to be happy. No matter how disgusting it is, seeing the “W Rizz” freshman humbled as their crush denies their oh-so-special flowers and chocolates melts even the coldest of hearts. If you could care less, then what about old people? Have you ever seen an old and in love couple; it is the purest and sweetest form of love and I strive for it.
No matter how painfully single you are, you can’t deny the giddy smile from that teacher who does their hair funky, or even a cheap Wal-Mart cookie. Although it isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, Valentine’s is great, and it does not have to be a holiday for lovers, so anyone can celebrate. |
