By: Amalie Gutierrez Echoes Writer Sept. 29, 2023 On Sept. 8, 2023, SHS played against Frederick High School in Frederick Colorado. The Bearcats won with the final score of 51 to 28. This game was not just a success because of the win, but also because Scottsbluff came home with a record broken. Senior kicker, Tallon McDonald, #30, broke a school record during the game. “He broke a class B record and tied the all-classification record for the state of Nebraska with a 59-yard field goal,” Head Coach Judson Hall explains. McDonald’s success is not a surprise to his coaches and teammates. His personality and performance go hand in hand, contributing to his accomplishment. “Tallon is a very likable, hard working kid, who does what he is supposed to do in practice and who really enjoys kicking [he] wants to be good at it,” Hall says. McDonald explains how he ended up with his kicking position and how he has continued to play throughout his high school career. Looking back on his four years playing football at SHS, McDonald will be able to say that he contributed an important milestone to the history of Scottsbluff football. “In 2018, we had a couple of NSAA playoff records set but I don’t recall another regular season record being set in the last five or six years,” Hall explains. |
Although Scottsbluff High School Football has had successes in the past, McDonald’s record is something that hasn’t been seen before.
“I felt really excited and it was just a really cool moment,” Tallon says. McDonald shares how he hopes to continue playing well and finish off the season on a good note. McDonald’s love for football is simply just because the sport is fun to him, it's even more fun now that he can say he has broken a record. “My coaches and teammates were really excited, and everyone was congratulating me,” Tallon says. Having a supportive team in such a celebratory time is important to a student-athlete who has accomplished a prestigious thing, such as this. “Tallon breaking the record was really exciting. When the coach said we were kicking a field goal and it was at the end of the half, we all thought it was going in because he had a good leg. It was definitely a game changer and a mood changer of the game,” Sophomore teammate, Nate Kelly says. McDonald has impressed all of the Bearcat Football fans and will leave a legacy at SHS. With the love of his coaches and teammates, Tallon will bring much success to the team and continue to do what he loves. |
