By: Norah Fleming Editor in Chief Sept. 2, 2023 Has anyone else seen that tall dude in the right wing of the school? You know the guy, who is in Ms. Muhr’s old class. That isn’t just anyone; it’s Scottsbluff high school’s newest English teacher, Mitch Chapin! A Peru State graduate, Chapin plans to inspire students through his love of literature. “I really hope to get students to respect and engage with literature. They don’t have to love it, but they should make it a part of their lives.” Chapin describes. Though it is no small feat, Chapin’s position allows for him to succeed in his goal as being a teacher which also means being an influence. “We spend so much time together that we, as teachers, leave an imprint. Students don’t always remember Macbeth or ‘The Lottery,’ or the books that they read, but you remember how that teacher treated you and how they made you feel.” Chapin describes. Chapin’s ideology relates directly to his high school years. He doesn’t mention essays and lectures but rather his experiences. |
“I played basketball, soccer, I was in all state one act, along with our school's productions, and forensics,” Chapin recalls.
These many activities have shaped Chapin into who he is now, a relatable, relaxing and interesting individual! NHe strives to give students a voice, as well as confidence. “I think it is fun to read out loud. I love reading with students, and my focus is to create relationships,” Chapin describes. Even though it is his first year at SHS, Chapin still credits the school and its students. “As a school, SHS is the most organized and supportive school I’ve been in, and I’ve been in eight through subbing and teaching. I love the faculty, the students, and I cannot wait to have a great year,” Chapin optimistically states. For now though, the year is still young. Chapin’s plans will certainly come to fruition with time, but for now, he is just an all together friendly guy with cool shoes. “I do have a sick sneaker game. I can’t just say it though. You have to see it,” Chapin alludes. |
